My Home Assistant Project – Equipment & Software

I have recently built a small automation system with Home Assistant to help simplify navigating Sky Q. In my case I have built it for someone with dementia who has difficulty pressing the channel numbers quick enough to change the channel. I wanted to build something that they can press a single button and have the SkyQ box change to that buttons channel automatically.

This first post in the project details the equipment and software that I have used to build the system. I should point out that in some cases the equipment can be optional or can be swapped out on a specification vs need basis. I will show some of the alternatives as well.

The great thing I think about using a Raspberry Pi based computer system for this Home Assistant project is that the variety of accessories and options means that you can easily adapt and change. The Raspberry Pi is a small, affordable computer about the size of a credit card. You can connect it to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse and use it just like a regular computer for browsing the internet, watching videos, or working on documents. It uses a microSD card for storage and runs its own operating system. It really is a great thing to start a hobbyist on their indulgent journey…. just like me.

If you are looking for something a little more general than this SkyQ Project, then do take a look at some of the other pages on the site, where I will detail some of the things I am doing in my own home – which the wife does not really like!
